Land Acknowledgment

Project XV Museum acknowledges that this building was constructed on the unceded ancestral homeland of numerous Native Tribes, including the Kickapoo of the Algonquin language family, who were tragically compelled to migrate west of the Mississippi River due to the pressures of colonization. This area is also home to the rich histories of the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Oglala Sioux, and Miami Nation, among other tribes whose narratives have been marginalized or forgotten by history. The legacies of these tribes are integral to understanding the cultural and historical tapestry of this land.

With recognize with heavy hearts the painful truths surrounding the genocide, displacement, and ongoing injustices inflicted upon Native tribes by non-Native settlers and the United States government. This acknowledgment is not merely a statement of regret, but a call to action for all of us to confront and reflect on the historical injustices that have shaped our society and continue to impact Indigenous communities today.

We express our deep respect and gratitude to the Indigenous peoples—both past and present—whose strength, resilience, and wisdom remind us of our significant responsibilities as stewards of the land we inhabit. Their enduring connection to the land serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our natural environment and honoring the traditions that have been passed down through generations. We encourage everyone to delve into the rich histories, vibrant communities, and diverse cultures of all the Indigenous peoples on whose land they live, work, and enjoy. The stories of these cultures are not only a vital part of our collective history but also a source of inspiration and insight into living harmoniously with the land and one another.

We invite you to explore the resources linked below as part of your journey towards understanding and awareness. These materials are designed to facilitate a deeper connection with the Indigenous communities and their histories. The stories and lives woven into the fabric of this land, upheld by its Native guardians, are essential and continue to resonate today. By engaging with these narratives, we can honor their legacy and work towards a more just and equitable future for all.
